Obituary for Samuel F. "Sam" Vitello

Samuel  F.  "Sam"  Vitello
Samuel F. Vitello, age 91 of South River died peacefully at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with his loving wife at his side. Born in PA, he had resided in South River for the past 58 years. After graduating from Anita & Punxsutawney High School, Mr. Vitello entered WWII as a member of the US Army, 90th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized where he served in 7 European countries, including his participation at the Battle of the Bulge. Sam was also awarded numerous medals of honor including 3 battle stars, a bronze star, a Good Conducts Medal, an American Campaign Medal, and a WWII Victory Medal.

Before his retirement in 1985, Samuel worked for the Permacel Division of Johnson & Johnson in North Brunswick as a machinist. He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka RC Church in Sayreville as well a member of the American Legion Post 25 in Milltown and VFW Post 1451 of South River. Sam also loved to sing and play his guitar whenever he could.

He is predeceased by his parents Alphonso & Stella (Lento), brothers Thomas & John and sisters-in-law Marian & Grace. Surviving are his beloved wife of 64 years Eleanor (Budny) of South River; brother Tony of Somerset; and sisters Lillian Frary of Highland Park & Catherine Kirsch of Edison as well as many cousins, nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday 10:30am from the M.A. Maliszewski Funeral Home, 218 Whitehead Ave, South River followed by a 11am mass at St. Stanislaus Kostka RC Church in Sayreville and burial at St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
