After completing his service with an Honorable Discharge, Mario met his wife Anna Matesic (nee Perkovic) in Rome where they married (January 11, 1968) at a very young age and remained together for almost 50 years until his final days. After Anna and Mario married, they moved to the United States, where they built a modest life for themselves and their children - Pete, Sandra and Angelo. Mario suffered from heart disease from a very early age and fought his battle for many years with determination until the end.

Mario is survived by his wife Anna, son Zeljko Petar, daughter Sandra Matesic-Smith (Glenn), and son Angelo Matesic (Lisa). Mario is also survived by his grandchildren Niko DeCristofaro and Isabel Smith, whom he loved and adored. Mario also leaves behind his brother Nino Matesic (Vesela), sister Mirela Ercegovic (Vinko), sister-in-law Marija Perkovic (Sime, Deceased), sister-in-law Katica Bozic, sister-in-law Ljubica Sabljak (Marko). Mario is pre-deceased by his step-son Igor Bozic and Mario is also survived by many nieces and nephews, along with their spouses and children.

Mario spent his working days in the meat packing district in New York. He strove to provide his family with a foundation and opportunities in America, while maintaining ties to many Croatian traditions. Mario and Anna traveled back to their homeland in Croatia nearly every year and always hoped they could retire there. Mario will always be remembered for his enduring battle with heart disease and diabetes and his desire to beat those infirmities. For more than 30 years, he defied the medical odds.
