Katharine  R.  Zera
South River
Katharine R. Zera, age 99 of South River, passed away peacefully at Bridgeway Care Center in Bridgewater on Wednesday, September 6, 2017. Born and raised in South River, she was a lifelong resident of the borough where she was happily married and raised a family. Katharine was a member of the St. Monica’s club and the local PTA, and was an assistant Cadette Girl Scout troop leader. She also loved watching ice skating, fondly remembering her days as a child skating on Dailey’s Pond behind her home.
Katharine is predeceased by her beloved husband of 69 years Edward in 2008 and her brother Harold Scupp in 2011. Surviving are her loving daughter Toni (Antoinette) & husband Charles Schlegel of Washington, NJ; granddaughter Cara and her husband Jon Torta of Ashland, MA; and sister-in-law Helen Scupp of South River.
Funeral services will take place Monday 9am from the Maliszewski Memorial Home, 121 Main Street, Sayreville with a 9:30am mass at St. Stephen Protomartyr RC Church in South River. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in East Brunswick.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday from 2pm to 6pm.
In lieu of flowers and in light of the recent hurricane devastation, donations may be made in Katharine’s name to Catholic Charities USA, P.O. Box 17066, Baltimore, MD 21297 or to the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org/donate/donation.
The Zera family would also like to send a very special thank you to all the employees of the South River Office on Aging and MCAT for all their support and kindness over the years as well as to the wonderfully caring staff at Bridgeway Senior Care Center.
