Obituary for Catherine Roe

Catherine Roe
On Sunday, July 1, 2018, Catherine Theresa Roe, a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away after a brief illness at the age of 92.

Catherine was born to Irish immigrants Anna Harris and John Joseph McCarthy in New York, New York on April 18, 1926. While their life in New York was not easy, “Lindy,” as family called her, and her two sisters, Mary and Anna May, learned very early that leaning on each other would be important to stay strong in good times and in not so good ones.

On January 31, 1948, Catherine married Thomas Joseph Roe, a sergeant in the United States Army and WWII veteran. They had two daughters, Christine and Maureen, and a son, Thomas. Catherine was married for only 16 years when her husband passed in November of 1964. She raised her three children at a time when it was not easy for a widow to work and be a mother, as well.

Catherine worked tirelessly for over 50 years in New York City, a city she loved and never once complained about the commute. For nearly 24 of those years, she thrived at the powerhouse law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in Manhattan. It was there that Catherine became the legal secretary to one of the best lawyers of his time, Arthur Liman. “Cath” earned the respect of her boss and her co-workers daily and formed bonds that went beyond the office. Even when meeting Senators, Congressmen, a U.S. President, as well as CEOs, the heads of Hollywood studios, producers and directors, she always treated them the same as everyone else she encountered: with kindness.

Catherine’s hard work enabled her, at age 61, to purchase her first home. Ten years later, she retired to enjoy her pets and garden. She traveled to Ireland, California, and New Mexico, but was most at home watching her beloved New York Yankees. Catherine often mentioned that she saw the Bronx Bombers play at the original Yankee Stadium, as well as the new Yankee Stadium, a time that spanned from Lou Gehrig to Derek Jeter.

Catherine was known for her wit, infectious laugh, and her love of animals. She donated passionately to animal welfare organizations and took in several orphaned cats and dogs in during her life. There was never a time when you would visit Catherine’s home and not see a dog and a cat near her chair, even until her last days.

When it came to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Catherine never forgot a birthday, graduation, or important event. Every year on her grandchildren’s birthdays, she would call to sing “Happy Birthday” in only a way she could. Catherine often spoke of how special it was to see her grandchildren get married in 2004 and hold all three great-grandchildren.

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, and sister, Mary. She is survived by her children, Christine (Robert) Mollica and Thomas (Deborah Bloom) Roe, her sister, Anna May; grandchildren Jason (Michelle) Mollica and Ryan (Karen) Mollica; great-grandchildren Madison, Ellie, and Tyler as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Maliszewski Memorial Home, 121 Main St. in Sayerville, N.J., from 4 to 7 o’clock p.m. A service will be held at the memorial home at 6:30 p.m. on July 5. Interment will take place on Friday, July 6, at Beverly National Cemetery, 916 Bridgeboro Rd., in Beverly, N.J. at 10:30 a.m.
